Working to Halt Online Abuse (WHOA) Announces Winner of Logo Contest
March 15, 2001

WHOA President Jayne Hitchcock announced today that Stephen Schaffer was the winner of the organization's logo contest.

Schaffer designed the winning logo, which will be used on WHOA's web site and in its correspondence. Schaffer said he entered the contest after reading WHOA's mission statement, which is to educate the Internet community about online harassment, empower victims of harassment, and formulate voluntary policies that systems administrators can adopt in order to create harassment-free environments.

"I think WHOA's mission statement may share some commonality with what I try to convey to my students regarding design as a humanistic activity," said Schaffer. "In the end we as present/future designers are ethically responsible for the cultural and environmental consequences of the work we do."

Schaffer is a visiting instructor at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. He teaches 2D design, digital video editing and web design, among other subjects. Schaffer also works as a freelance graphic artist.

Finalists in the contest were Brenda Cloninger and Richard Knox. Cloninger is from Baltimore, MD and Knox resides in Manchester, NH. Both said they entered the contest because they believe in the work WHOA does.

"With the growth of the online community comes the growth of online abuse," said Cloninger. "It can happen to any of us. I am glad to help to prevent and end the abuse of others."

Knox agreed. "I believe in WHOA's cause," he said. "WHOA's continued work is the true prize."
